In 1857 Kanpur has important British Garrison with 7000 soldiers. Nanasaheb captured 900 British in a war fought for 22 days, the first Indian Independence war.
From Sati Chaura Ghat the British boarded boats to leave to Allahabad but, many were killed becos of the adament behaviour of the British. About 200 british women and children were brought back and sent to BIBIGHAR. Then British under General Henry were able to capture Kanpur again. # days before the capture the remaining British in Bibighar were butchered using professional butcherers as the soldeirs refused to carryout the gruesome act before British entered the city on July 18, 1857. The dismemebered bodies were thrown into a nearby well.
The
British army of retribution under General Neill then committed series of attrocities againt Indian sepoyees and the civilians in the area and massacred women, children and old men.
Then, British dismantled the Bibighar and a memorial was built at the site of the well and a church was built in 1862 All soul's cathedral and reamed as Kanpur memorial church. This area is also on the north east corner of Wheeler's entranchment.
British troops came from Lucknow and the Nana saheb's and ATantya Tope (war commander of Nana Saheb) could not suceed. The British were brutal they made the captured Indian Sepoys to strip and smear their bodies in beef or pork fat before being tied to the front of cannons and blown apart. Those taken in Cawnpore were made to lick the blood from the walls of the Bibighar House and then hanged. Whenever a British soldier might demur at such treatment of a fellow human being the cry of “Remember Cawnpore” would go up.
Bibighar and the well where British were jailed. It was kept under Hussaini Khanum, a lady whom the British has forced to prostitution earlier days. She has the grudge to British and british ladies as her life was ruined by the british soldiers and british officers who have forced her into prostitution for their enjoyment. Bibighar was destroyed after the british captured the place and the indian soldiers were made to lick the blood on the walls of the bibighar before being tied to the cannons and blown apart. Ruthless english general name is Henry Havelock. One of the most wicked general of all the british of East India Company. This well is now sealed and it is near Nana Rao Park I beleive.
Tantya Tope, would go onto lead a brilliant guerilla campaign against British forces that was to win him the admiration of his opponents before he was finally captured by troops of General Napier, and hanged on 18 April, 1859. Nana Sahib, disappeared and was never seen again.
On 10 May 1857 Indian Mutiny began in Meerut. It started becos o
n 24 April, Lt-Colonel George Carmichael-Smyth, a brutal and unsympathetic jr level british officer has ordered the bengal cavalry to remove with mouth the pork fat sticken papers on the amunition for the guns.85 of the 90 soldiers refused to do so. He has arrested all the 85 for disobedience and punished them in an in human ways.
On 9 May, the entire garrison was assembled to witness their court-martial. They were sentenced to be drummed out of the service, imprisoned to ten years hard labour, and deprived of their pensions. Their comrades had to watch as they were publicly humiliated, physically stripped of their uniforms and shackled. As they were led away they noisily berated their fellow Sepoys for not supporting them. In the early hours of the following morning they broke into the prison where they were being held and released the convicted men. In opening the prison gates they released onto the streets hundreds of murderers, thieves and bandits who took their vengeance on any white person they could find, men, women or children. Christian missionaries were hacked to death, off-duty soldiers attacked in the bazaar, prostitutes murdered their clients. The reaction of the Sepoys was mixed, some helped British families to escape the carnage, a few remained loyal, but there was little doubt that they were now in open rebellion
This is the Ghat from where the british boarded the boats tol eave to Allahabad.
On 5 June 1857, the reellion on British started in Kanpur against General Hugh Wheeler. Gneral Wheeler's son col.Gardon got decapacitated by an artillary shell after a week into e war. say by 12 June 1857. On 27 June 1857, the General bargained to leave the british troops to Allahabad by boats. There was disagreement and the boats were targeted. The general with 4 british officers were broght back from the boat he was riding.Whole night Wheeler was firing against the tantya tope's soldiers. Finally in the morning he was caught along with 11 (4 british soldiers) and the four were executed on the orders of Tantya Tope as they were killing his men all through night.
Outside well where the monument is built by british in 1859 and is known as all soul's cathedral church I used to pass by this church as I used this empty road to go to the Phool bagh area from the backside gate of war memorial colony. The Sutter Ghat is also known as the Massacre ghat is just above this area. Mather's mother waqs cremated in this ghat. It has a typical shiva ghat mandir.
SAVADA KOTI is the residence of NANA SAHEB PISHWA and the british were shot in the maidan opposite savada koti residence of nana saheb.
Dewan Azimullah Khan Yusufzai (1830-1859) and Tantya tope continued guerella war upto 1859.
In 1853 Nana Saheb Pishwa send him to England to plead his application for the continuation of the royalty given to his father Baji rao Pishwa (adopted son) 70,000 pounds but, has to return in 1855 without any success. He has an attractive physique and as many as 53 British women wanted to enjoy unethical reationaship with him including the queens daughter. Azimullah khan and returned and then by 1857 the mutiny started. the BOOK below is on mutiny. The very purpose of east india company to do business is missing entirely and the british have been seen doing all the wrong things to make all indians as slaves. to the british. Any opposition to slavery to british is projected as a crime. But, the crime the british are doing has not been highlighted as crime at all.
